Going South

I appear to have reached a stage in my life where everyone is getting married or at least announcing their engagement, although I am trying to ignore this fact because I am definitely not old enough for this to be happening. Gosh no. I’m practically a teenager.

I spent this past weekend in Denmark, five-ish hours south of Perth, celebrating the marriage of my friends Danielle and Ryan. The weekend was lovely as I caught up with friends who I haven’t seen in a while, drank plenty of good wine (yes, Australian wine IS good, all of you French-wine-is-the-best-snobs), and ate lots of good food. I got a bit teary eyed watching my beautiful friend, Dan, walk down the aisle and become a Mrs. It appears Paris may have made me a romantic after all.

One of the highlights of the weekend was dinner with my friends Velia and Alex at Pepper & Salt, a restaurant attached to the Mathilda’s Estate winery. The food, while priced at your now average Perth prices (i.e. ridiculous), was absolutely delicious with locally sourced ingredients and an interesting mix of flavours. I had pink snapper that was lightly battered with a hint of lemon myrtle, homemade chips and a decent salad. This satisfied my craving for fish and chips while being light and not horribly greasy.

The highlight of the meal was dessert (of course). You can imagine my extreme excitement when our lovely waiter described our dessert options and said the words “Flourless, dark chocolate torte with pepper and chilli”. HOLY MOLY. It was good. It was dark, rich and the pepper made the chocolate buzz. It was served with a piece of chocolate through which were crunchy chucks of pepper. The berries served on the side had been stewed in what I presumed was port and added another dimension to the dish. I was extremely satisfied and very happy to wash it down with a rich, bold Shiraz from the Mathilda’s vineyard.

News From Newbliss

Tom and I went to Florida again last weekend and headed towards Dwellingup to Newbliss Winery for another dose of good food and great views. It didn’t disappoint – in fact we had the added pleasure of being one of only 3 groups of people at the winery and had the place to ourselves for a little while. Considering it was packed to the brim last time we visited it was quite a contrast.

The weather was perfect to sit outside and enjoy a spinach and ricotta quiche followed by the freshly baked sticky date pudding which is the main reason we’d returned. So so good.

We sadly learnt that Newbliss is going up for sale as the lady running it has had enough. Considering that morning she had fed some sheep, cows, chooks and a cricket team before returning to the restaurant to bake a cheesecake, the sticky date pudding, a quiche and the lasagna, I’m not surprised. Hopefully it will be bought by someone with a similar relaxed and friendly attitude as the current owners. A very enjoyable day out.

I Heart Food.

I spent this last weekend down in Florida again, which meant another weekend of excessive eating. We always seem to over cater but just end up gorging on delicious things for 2 days straight. I’m not complaining but it does result in me returning to the real world, vowing to eat only lettuce leaves for the rest of my life. Here was the menu:

Friday night – A roast vegetable salad with honey rosemary chicken. Followed up with apple and rhubarb crumble.
Saturday morning – Muesli, banana and yoghurt.
Saturday lunch (see below) – Cheese and meat platter and sticky date pudding.
Saturday dinner – Roast lamb with roasted vegies and left over apple and rhubarb crumble.
Sunday morning/lunch (see below) – PANCAKES!
Sunday dinner – Veal, mushroom pie, salad and a slice of bread.

EXPLODE.

Saturday lunchtime we moved away from the palm trees of Florida and headed towards Dwellingup to  Newbliss Winery. We had grown sick of the grumpy service we receive at Cape Bouvard Winery, our usual lunch location, so we were overwhelmed with the friendly welcome and lovely food we received at Newbliss. The owner offered us tastings of their wines and practically filled our glasses to the brim with each try. A decent selection of wines and two lovely ports that when ‘spritzed’ with a dash of coke from the can she had been drinking from earlier, the owner assured us tasted like sherry. The boy and I shared a cheese platter for two when we were informed the home farmed marron had sold out. The cheese platter was mostly from jars/packets/IGA but it was a great selection and filled us quite nicely. The wine tasting had gone to my head by the time the cheese arrived so I forgot to take a photo (so unlike me), but check out this view:

We went all out and ordered sticky date puddings (one each, of course) and they were home made, huge servings and delicious. I often find sticky date puddings too solid and overwhelming but this was soft, light and not too sweet. Definitely something to go back for.

One sweet goodie for a weekend is never enough – I’ve never cooked pancakes for breakfast and so was quite excited by the boy’s eagerness to do so. He made ricotta based pancakes while I whipped up some baked bananas and stewed apple and rhubarb (it’s my new favourite thing… so tasty yet so healthy!). So so good. Definitely something to do as frequently as possible.
